What can I do to promote my website?

Redplug works hard to optimize your website's keywords so its easy to find online. But there are a number of things you can do to promote your website on your own.

  • Print your website address on all your printed material: business cards, for sale signs, letterhead, newspaper ads, notepads, calendars, envelopes, cheques, your car, fridge magnets, etc.
  • Include an email signature at the bottom of every email message you send out. e.g. "Ross Browning . . . Trust the experience. Check out www.rossbrowning.com for comprehensive downtown condo listings." Note: You can setup your email program to include this signature automatically.
  • Provide your email/web address to your national MLS, local board and franchise head office to be included in their websites and realtor directories.
  • Submit your website address to industry specific directory or portal websites that offer free links, such as real-estate-agents.com.
  • Invite current clients to check out the many resources on your website.

What is a search engine? What is search engine optimization / keyword indexing / search engine submission?

Whenever someone is looking for anything on the internet, they go to a search service such as Google to enter the keywords ( search term) they are interested in. The search engine will then output a list of web pages that contain the keywords the user entered.

Search engine optimization is a process that increases the amount of qualified traffic to your website by making it easier to find via a search service website. Search engine optimization includes 2 main strategies: keyword indexing and search engine submission.

Keyword Indexing

Keyword indexing is a process of adding specific keywords to your website to describe the contents of its pages for the benefit of search services. Specifically, appropriate keywords are added to the titles, content and the HTML code of your website's pages. Keyword indexing helps ensure that your website will be found when a user is looking for home listings, real estate tips, resources, or a real estate professional in your area.

Search Engine Submission

Only web pages that have been submitted to a search service's database, will be included in the results of a search. For this reason, its necessary to submit your website's address to the major search services once its up and running. Its not necessary to submit directly to the less popular search services as they draw information from the major ones automatically.

Why doesn't my website do as well in the search engine listings as it used to?

Even when a website is carefully designed for search engine success, there are a number of reasons why rankings deteriorate over time.

1. More competing web pages.

If your website has been around for more than a year or two, there may now be 2, 10 or 100 times the amount of competing web pages for the same keywords. For example, if your website went online in 1996 when only 1 out of 100 had a website, you probably enjoyed top rankings. Now that everyone has a website, top rankings are much harder to come by.

The good news is that the days of exponential internet growth are behind us as everyone in the industry already has a website.

2. Out of date website content

When was the last time you updated your website? You may not remember, but the search engines do. Web pages that are rarely updated are ranked lower than those that are updated frequently.

The solution to this problem is obvious. Update your website content frequently: add new content; revise or delete what's old; make your website show some life. Make sure your home page changes every few months, even if its just the welcome message. Keep your listings up to date. 3. Competing web pages are search-engine savvy.

4. Your websites' keywords may need to be refined and differentiated to achieve higher rankings.

Most website search engine optimization strategies begin with a survey of the keywords that competing websites are using. In this case, you'll need to highlight more specific keywords to improve your odds of top rankings. Use "real estate property listings" instead of the generic "real estate".
